What is estrogen and why is it important?
Estrogen is a hormone that regulates a number of functions in the body,
including sexual function, bone health, and proper cholesterol balance.
Estrogen is both necessary and beneficial, but it can also be harmful to our
health when our natural hormone levels are out of balance.
Phytoestrogens are beneficial for men and women.
Prostate cancer, breast cancer, and even common menopause maladies such as
"hot flashes" have been found to be prevalent in Western societies but
almost unknown in many Eastern cultures. Why? After a closer examination of
each society's diet and cancer rate differences, scientists found a
link---the consumption of a soy-rich diet! A closer look at the soybean
further revealed that soy is rich in several phytochemicals, including
isoflavones, genistein, and phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogens are especially
interesting because they are structurally similar to estrogen and when they
are consumed, they tend to act as weak estrogens. A woman's risk for
osteoporosis and heart disease rises dramatically when her estrogen levels
drop prior to and during menopause. Hormone balancing may seem to be a
women's issue, but men are at risk as well. As men age, the ratio of
